Re: Craftsman Serial Number Breakdown Info Request in reply to Aaron, 08:55:07 To best of my knowledge there is not an 'open' list of Sears number decoding, other than the prefixes. In your case '917.' Get shopping advice from experts, friends and the community! The model number on my Craftsman riding mower is worn off. I have the serial number (09). I need to find a manual for this mower. Please use your CRAFTSMAN model number on our partner's site for all your parts & service needs. Order replacement parts. Track parts and repairs. Access an extensive selection of tool schematics and manuals. Locate one of our Factory-Owned or Authorized Service Centers. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The date of production/manufacture or age of U.S. CRAFTMASTER® Water Heater(s) can be determined from the serial number. Serial number styles/formats found are: Style 1. The first 3 numbers in the serial number represents the day of the year. (If I did my math correctly the 281st day should be Oct 8th). The 4th number is the last digit of the year. I suspect that would be 1985 as it can't be 1995 because of the serial numbering system change and it looks newer (to me) than 1975. I hope this helps!

I recently picked up a Craftsman YT 16 44' riding mower for free due to a steering issues according to the previous owner. The steering issue has been taken care of by degreasing and putting new grease on the spindles. The deck is shot and has plenty of holes in it, so this will be a play toy at best.
I would like to know how old this unit is if possible. The model number is 917.255820 with a serial number of 0795 S04466. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advnace for your time

To best of my knowledge there is not an 'open' list of Sears number decoding, other than the prefixes. In your case '917.' indicates yours is AYP(American Yard Products)built, the major supplier of Sears tractors for several years now/ There is some indication that first digits of AYP serial no is open date code(in your case 07/95)however I cannot confirm this info.As said below,Engine date code(if original)would be a good indicator.

If a Briggs engine, check the CODE number on the engine. The first two numbers are the YEAR the engine was built. The next two are the MONTH. You can come close with, if you have them, these numbers.

Craftsman Riding Mower Serial Number Decoder

The Model, Type and Code numbers, stamped directly into the engine, are used to identify our engines. Engines used in lawn mower applications usually have the model numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug. Depending on the style of engine shroud used, the engine code numbers may be covered. It may be necessary to remove this shroud in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code for engine identification.

To get step-by-step instructions on finding your engine model number, type or code, watch this short video:

Where Can I Find the Model Numbers, Type & Codes on OHV Generator Engines?

Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have the serial and model numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER our cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the model number, type, and engine code.

If you need help identifying your Briggs & Stratton engine, please visit our engine model number locator guide to find these numbers.

Also, be aware that the numbers found on the Engine Emissions Label (bottom left) can be confused with the engine Model, Type and Code. Unfortunately, these numbers cannot be used to identify your engine.

What do the Model, Type, and Code numbers mean on your engine?

To view a chart which explains our post 1965 model numbers, please visit our Numerical Designation System page.
